Working Professionally
Over my photographic career I have tried to be involved
in professional practices, shooting in as many different genres of photography
and videography as possible. After completing my placement last year in a
commercial photographic studio, I have continued to work in the industry
through several different jobs this year. In addition, I have continued to work
for Huddersfield’s student union and the university. Some of the ways I have
been engaging in commercial practices are:
EMG solicitors:
This was a video job for a solicitor firm, its purpose
was to serve as introduction for new and returning customers to hear about what
they do as a company and the service they provide. For this shoot it required
me to go to planning meetings to talk with both the client and production
company we were going to work with. In addition, the shoot was to take place
over two days, the first being to get some B-roll around their offices and set
up for the talking heads. The second day was shooting the talking heads. My
role for the shoot was camera operator and director of photography. I was also
tasked with the colour grade and rough draft that the editors could then refer
to edit the final shots together. This job took place in Alex Telfer’s studio
up in new castle. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpI6w0NjvK4&t=1s)

SUN 34:
Another way that I have been engaging in professional
practice is engaging with the wider photographic community and entering
competitions. One of these competitions was Shot up North where not only
was I a finalist but the youngest finalist that year in addition to the only
student that was selected that year. In addition, the work was in judged from
the channel 4 picture desk, this was a good way to get my work seen by
important people within the industry. As a whole the experience was very
reassuring and insightful. As part of the competition, I had my work displayed
with the other finalists for the awards, this night was not only fun but useful
as I was able to speak to other professionals in industry get insights and make
connections.

Varsity:
Varsity is a yearly sporting event that takes place
between the university of Huddersfield and Bradford over the course of three
days in April. However, the work for the event starts in December with planning
meetings to come up with the marketing assets. This is my third year working on
varsity, and each year I have had a hand in helping come up with the campaigns.
This year consisted of two shoots prior, the first being a on location shoot
where the student officers reading a newspaper detailing the victory from the
previous year around different key locations in Bradford. The second of these
shoots was studio doing creative headshots that then could be printed and put
around the university and used on social media. All of this culminating in a
three day shoot for different sporting events where it was my job to capture
both the action on and off the field.

completed this year
