Sam Brown Workshop

Samuel Brown is a photographer who came in to deliver a workshop on portrait lighting, Brown’s work specialises in creative products, food, drink, and portraiture.

This was an interesting and useful workshop where Sam balanced six lights at F8 and demonstrated lighting ratios; the images created were fun and had a punchy look.

In addition to this, he also talked about his background in industry, walking us through the steps that his career had taken. Whilst at university Sam went to work at a small studio named Banana studio where he would paint scoups, construct room sets, steam clothes, and retouch images before beginning to shoot jobs. He then moved to End Clothing, a company that was starting up where he was the head photographer. Here he helped to shape the photographic identity of the brand and later went on to work at Salt Brewery, photographing the products and process of making. After this he moved on to the role of studio director at Beauty Bay before moving into freelance work.

Sam’s explanation regarding his past roles was useful as it highlighted the brevity of jobs available in the industry and showed the possible direction that a photography career could take. To finish he opened the session up to us for Q and As, asking what we would like to do in the future. He asked us if we had started taking steps as final year students to achieve our goals and allowed us the opportunity to ask any questions we had about the industry.
